No, that's the right way to do it. At least, that's what it says in the Orlove Flight School Plane landing Handbook.

Any landing you can walk away from?
I'm confused. From the article, it sounds like he went inverted and "landed" inverted. The condition of the gear makes me think he hit hard and then flipped. The latter seems much more likely, and much more survivable.
